Preparing the Soil
A reflection on how meaningful growth starts with caring for our foundations. From setting boundaries and asking for help to resting, connecting with others and spending time in nature, small acts of self-care can create the conditions we need to grow and become more resilient.
Emily
Before a single seed is planted, the soil must be prepared.
A gardener doesn’t simply scatter seeds and hope for the best.
They turn the earth.
They remove the stones.
They gently pull away the weeds.
They add nourishment.
They make sure the ground is ready to support new life.
Perhaps our own lives are no different.
Our soil is our foundation.
It is our physical health.
It is our mental wellbeing.
It is the place we call home and whether it feels safe.
It is the relationships we choose to nurture.
It is the people we allow close enough to influence our growth.
It is the boundaries we learn to build.
It is the kindness we show ourselves when nobody else is watching.
It is the quiet moments where we choose healing over fear, honesty over pride, and hope over despair.
When our foundations are neglected, even the strongest seed struggles to grow.
But when we care for the soil first, growth becomes possible.
For a long time, I believed healing meant finding every answer.
If I could understand enough…
learn enough…
prepare enough…
then perhaps I would finally feel safe.
But healing isn’t about controlling tomorrow.
It is about caring for the ground beneath our feet today.
Sometimes preparing the soil doesn’t look impressive.
It can look like attending therapy.
Taking medication when we need it.
Learning to understand ourselves.
Asking for help.
Learning something new.
Reading a book.
Cleaning our home.
Taking a walk in nature.
Choosing nourishing food.
Sleeping well.
Moving our bodies.
Saying no to unhealthy relationships.
Repairing healthy ones.
Setting boundaries with kindness.
Choosing peace over conflict.
Resting when we are tired.
Laughing with our children.
Watching bird’s feed.
Planting flowers.
These quiet acts often go unnoticed.
Yet beneath the surface they are changing everything.
People may walk past freshly prepared soil and think nothing is happening.
But the gardener knows better.
The most important work often happens before anyone sees a single flower.
Healthy soil isn’t built in a day.
It is created by thousands of small choices that nobody applauds, but every flower quietly remembers.
Those choices become our roots.
They anchor us when storms arrive.
They remind us of who we are when life tries to convince us otherwise.
I haven’t planted my first seed just yet.
But I have prepared the soil.
And perhaps that’s where every beautiful garden truly begins.
So today I choose not to rush the seasons.
I choose to care for my foundations.
I choose to trust that growth is still taking place, even when I cannot yet see it.
Because healthy soil doesn’t just grow beautiful flowers.
It grows resilient ones.
And perhaps resilience isn’t about never being shaken.
Perhaps resilience is knowing that no matter how fierce the storm becomes…
our roots remain.
